Crash. If only-

I've just now rented and have seen the award winning movie “Crash”. I'm actually at a loss for words, not because I'm shocked at its intensity, but more so due to the in your face stereotypical nature of the film. Within 10 minutes we had the DVD player on pause because we had to discuss; “is everything so obvious for a reason?” There’s a racial thing there… and there, and there, and now there, and then again there, and there, oh there’s another one, and…there! Enough already!

I get it, it’s a movie about racism and yes it certainly got me thinking, but is everyone so stupid that they need it shoved in their faces? I really don’t think so, but it seems so popular I wonder if they do. Am I missing something here? Messages are more meaningful to me when they’re subtle, not when it’s spelled out in black and white-unless I’m just clueless to the situation. I was just waiting for Ryan Phillippe’s character to be gay, then we’d have all our bases covered.

We actually had to listen to the commentary the next night because we were so baffled by it. We thought maybe they portrayed these racist situations so belatedly for a reason and we just weren’t getting it. Nope. Can anyone help me out here? What’s going on?

I was not thrilled with Crash. I really don't get what everyone was raving about. We rented it when it first came out on video only because it has Jennifer Espostio in it, and I do like her, she's on my list.

Zoe, have you checked out the show "Related" with Jennifer?

Hi, found you through gaymo.

That movie should not even have been nominated. I watched it for Sandra Bullock *swoon* and Don Cheadle, but the movie certainly lacked subtlety.

No I haven't, when is it on? My TiVo is set to tape anything with her in it and yet it hasn't taped that show. Is it on ABC, NBC, or CBS. I could go into a rant about the networks not giving me a waiver to get a feed but I won't. My point is I don't have those network stations.

Zoe, are you telling me you don't have ABC,NBC,or CBS? What the...
Ah, "Related" is on TONIGHT (mon) from 7-9 central time on the WB (9) You're a little late because tonight is unfortunately the season finale. Good luck to you!

We have them on basic cable, which we keep for those three networks we can't get with directv. So, TiVo can't tape those networks. Really I think the only things we watch on those those networks are CSI(Vegas), and Lost. I'd dump the basic cable entirely, but our internet is through the cable company and it's just as much with or without basic cable, good old marketing.
I don't know if we get WB on dirctv, that may be why it didn't get TiVoed.

Okay, well, I am the "minority" here in that I really loved that movie (i hate using the love word for a movie) but you get my drift. Anyway... I guess I am going out on a limb to expand... for me what i took away was the capacity for humans to have a wide spectrum of wanting to "be" and "do" good and then also harboring the capacity to do just he opposite. It's a small space to elaborate completely. All i can say is i was very moved including balling at the end of the film. Just wanted to express a flip side. Best movie? That's debatable. In my opinion I doubt they were NOT going for 'subtlety'... my thought is that they were going for 'in your face'. Just one woman's opinion.

Hey vegan Monkey,
That's cool. I hear what you're saying and I'm glad the flick "moved" you. I don't mean to sound like a cold hearted person, I just prefer things a little less obvious. Thanks for jumping in!

Wow, my bad, I left a double negative... what I meant to say was - I doubt they were going for 'subtlety'.... anyway, well you got my point. I enjoy movie discussions quite a bit. It really bugs (me) when people have NOTHING to say after watching a movie...ya know... anywayzzzzzz... cheers!

I Loved the movie. Things ARE that bad for many people. I live with one. I would have rather Brokeback won, tho'.

I'm a late comer to this conversation, but I agree with veganmonkey. I saw this movie twice because there was so much going on. While we may have thought everything was in your face obvious, perhaps many didn't. I saw it with my older daughter before I had read anything about it, and we were both stunned by how intense and powerful it was. It was about redemption, hatred and love, the world as it can be and the world as we wish it to be - with heros and reconciliations.
